“People Above Process. Always.” This is a saying that Stephen Murray lives by, and he’s using the phrase to inspire the culture being built at CaringWays®, both internally with team members and externally with current and future customers.
When working with my team or when with a customer, I want to see them as a person first.
“I’ve worked at places where following the rules was more important than the person in front of you. It’s the kind of thing you see at the DMV, where you aren’t treated as a person. When working with my team or when with a customer, I want to see them as a person first and recognize that the systems and processes we have in place are meant to serve them, not restrict them.”
Treating others with respect and putting them above the bottom line of a business is part of what makes Stephen such a great addition to the CaringWays® team. In his role as the company’s Engagement Specialist, Stephen works with the platform’s partners to ensure patients are fully supported on their medical journeys.
While cancer has touched the lives of the founding members of CaringWays®, mental health advocacy is woven into Stephen’s story. He saw his first therapist in college and understands directly how helpful and life-changing therapy and mental health services can be. He also knows what a financial investment mental health care requires, and why it might serve as a barrier to someone seeking help.
“Mental health can be particularly challenging to receive help for. It’s not like you can just go to your primary care doctor, get a prescription for something and keep moving. There are so many different routes and so many different places to go. Even knowing where to start can be a challenge.”
Stephen Murray is only 27 years old, but you might think he’s a bit older with all of the work and life experience he has. He appreciates all the different ways a CaringWays® campaign can be used to support others, including fundraising for mental health services. That’s something he can speak to personally.
I’ve received financial assistance for mental health treatment more than once. That support opened the door to therapy I could not afford on my own.
“I’ve received financial assistance for mental health treatment more than once. That support opened the door to therapy I could not afford on my own. Therapy made a huge difference for me during a difficult time as I was able to connect with a therapist who worked as a basic human sounding board to listen, talk, and work through what I really wanted. It completely changed my trajectory and is the reason I went to grad school.”
It’s clear Stephen’s path has now put him exactly where he needs to be. He’s passionate about CaringWays® and grateful to be involved with a platform that helps people through some of life’s biggest challenges.
